The 2nd Annual Meeting of Arthroplasty Society in Asia with AO Recon
At the beginning of November 2014, the Arthroplasty Society in Asia (ASIA) held its second annual meeting in Seoul (KR) in collaboration with AO Recon. Two sessions about periprosthetic fractures and managing complications after hip and knee fractures took place under the AO Recon umbrella, each of them followed by paper presentations focusing on the same topics.
ASIA officers, long-time AO members and AO Recon speakers liaised to make this event possible and the faculty list substantiated this collaboration throughout the ASIA meeting agenda. Youn-Soo Park from Samsung Medical Center in Seoul (KR) participated in his dual capacity of AO Recon Education Delegation member and Secretary General of ASIA. Woo-Shin Cho and Jae-Suk Chang, both senior AO Faculty, moderated the AO Recon sessions with Norbert Haas (DE) and AO Foundation President Suthorn Bavonratanavech (TH). The three international AO Recon speakers and arthroplasty experts, Fares Haddad (UK), Michael Huo (US), and Bas Masri (CA) spoke at the AO Recon sessions, moderated the associated paper presentations, and held selected presentations during the other sessions. Youn-Soo Park and Myung-Chul Lee from Seoul National University Hospital (KR) represented Korea among the AO Recon arthroplasty experts.
The collaboration with AO Recon was emphasized throughout the meeting: Myung-Chul Yoo, President of ASIA, thanked AO Recon for the collaboration in his welcome and his gala speech, while the collaboration was praised in the gala keynotes speeches by Yan Wang (CN) and incoming ASIA president, S.K.S Marya (IN). Subsequently, AO Honorary Trustee Key-Yong Kim spoke about the AO Foundation's history.
The feedback collected for both the AO Recon sessions and the ASIA meeting as a whole, indicate that there is a high need for education in arthroplasty and the topics covered by AO Recon at this meeting. This was underlined by numerous discussions and meetings alongside the academic program, and by the invitation of the incoming president of ASIA, S.K.S. Marya to hold next year's ASIA meeting, once again in collaboration with AO Recon, in Delhi (IN).
